FAQ

What's the difference between green tea and matcha?

Matcha comes from camellia sinensis, the same plant all true tea leaves come from. However, the growth style, harvest, and production techniques are markedly different for Matcha making it more expensive on a ounce for ounce comparison. As opposed to regular steeped tea when you drink Matcha you consume the entire tea leaf and all of the nutritional value in it. You only get about 20% of the nutrients with regular steeped green tea. In fact, one cup of Matcha has 10x the antioxidants and nutritional value of a regular cup of green tea even though the serving size is much smaller. It's basically a lot more packed into a lot less!

What does Matcha taste like?

Matcha has an earthy, astringent flavor not that different from regular green tea. A fuller bodied, creamy vegetal taste with a lingering sweetness is characteristic of "premium" Matcha like that found in our Just Matcha. Culinary Matcha is more subtle and is best for adding to shakes or in cooking as it's less expensive on a ounce for ounce basis.

Where is it made?

Matcha is primarily made in China and most notably Japan. In China, the harvesting process has become extremely industrialized over the years and more often than not Matcha from there is associated with being low quality and cheap. In Japan however the growing and production of Matcha has evolved into an art form as opposed to a manufacturing process. Our complete Matcha Muscle collection is made from Matcha grown in the famed tea region of Uji in Kyoto, Japan. This small city, located by the banks of the Uji-gawa River has longed been famed for it's green tea and historic sites. Our packaging facility is located in Buffalo, NY.

How much Matcha can I have each day?

In Japan it is customary to drink Matcha Tea throughout the day during exercise, relaxation, or as a drink with food. Drinking Matcha provides a mega dose of antioxidants along with a boost of energy that can be enjoyed several times a day. Unlike coffee or an energy drink there is no crash or negative side effects.

Is there caffeine in Matcha?

Yes. One cup Matcha has a little more than half the caffeine of a cup of coffee. However, through the process of shading the leaves before harvest powerful amino acids are also produced, resulting in a slow release of the caffeine into the blood stream. The result is a more sustained energy boost without the crash normally associated with coffee and energy drinks. Matcha also speeds up the metabolism and has been known to aid in regulating blood sugar.

How do I prepare it?

Matcha is as versatile as it is healthy and can be consumed as a hot tea, in drinks, or it can be used in baking and cooking. For more information on Matcha grades and how to use check out our Matcha Preparation Guide
